Initial problem and legal requirements

BEV and PHEV-Batteries are constantly exposed to external events (e.g. mechanical stress, overcharging or short circuits). These thermal events can cause a battery cell to overheat and inflame. If a battery cell catches fire, the risk of a chain reaction will be very high, which will inflame the entire battery and after that most likely will spread to the passenger cabin. This results in a life-threatening situation for the passengers.

In order to ensure the safety of all BEV and PHEV passengers, legal requirements have been defined that contain specifications about the thermal propagation test for the battery system requirements. The existing global and national regulations define that the system must withstand a minimum of 5 minutes after the thermal event and the passenger warning occur.
